Karen Caswell has known Josh Rodgers for nearly a decade, dating back to his early days at Wentworth Steels Limited while he was studying AAT. In 2017, she placed him at Naylor Industries and has since followed his impressive career journey - culminating in his qualification in 2025 and recent appointment as Financial Controller. It’s been a pleasure to see his progression and success over the years.
I’ve always been analytical and numbers-orientated, so a career in accounting and finance felt like the perfect fit. My Dad has run his own business for over 15 years, which naturally influenced my decision. What really appealed to me was the opportunity to not only analyse the financials but also contribute to decision-making that shapes the future direction of a company.
What inspired you to pursue AAT and later CIMA qualifications?
When I first started in finance, I needed to gain credibility for myself to build a strong foundation for my career. AAT gave me practical, foundational knowledge which I could apply in my first role as Accounts Assistant. As I progressed and took on more responsibility, it felt right to develop my understanding of strategic finance and business planning, which led me onto CIMA. It aligned perfectly with my long-term goals of moving into a more rounded finance leadership role.
The main reason I’ve stayed at Naylor for nearly a decade is the continuous opportunity for growth and development within my field. I started as an Accounts Assistant and since progressed to Financial Controller, taking on more responsibility at each stage. I have worked for some great leaders and mentors who have relentlessly pushed me to become a better person and finance professional, and I continue to learn every day.
I use Excel daily from financial modelling to rolling forecasts to analysing large data sets. With practice, I have become proficient in advanced functions that allow for improved accuracy and turnaround time on month-end close.
I also use Microsoft Dynamics GP. While it may be considered outdated, it serves a purpose for my needs effectively. I am self-taught on the system from when I joined in 2017, and since been able to adapt it to support my role.
Without a doubt, completing my CIMA qualification. I set out to earn credibility in the profession, and achieving chartered status was a major milestone that confirmed I was on the right path, though still plenty to learn and accomplish. I’d also say that progressing from Accounts Assistant to Financial Controller within the same company is something I am genuinely proud of. It reflects greatly on Naylor, their consistent development and complete trust from leadership.
My honest advice for someone starting their AAT and finance career would be to get involved in everything you can. Exposure is the greatest learning tool. I’d also suggest learning the finance function from the ground up, understand how departments work alongside finance and the impact they have on each other. Make sure to grasp accounting procedures like double-entry bookkeeping, it will help you quickly develop a deep understanding of core accounting principles.
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, whether that’s going to the gym or playing 5-a-side football. I really value spending time with friends and family, and I frequently attend Hillsborough, unfortunately that does mean I’m a Sheffield Wednesday fan.
